Vehicle Trackers FAQs
What system is most widely used for vehicle tracking?
Vehicle tracking systems are usually based on GPS technology, which allows users to track vehicles from anywhere in the world. The main advantage of using these types of systems is that they do not require any additional hardware and are easily installed.
However, some disadvantages include the high price of the equipment, and the need to install additional software for advanced features.
Can you tell if your car has a tracker installed?
The easiest way to check for a thief to check for a tracking device is to look at the steering wheel, as many people plug their tracker directly into the on-board diagnostics. If they notice a small black box attached to the steering wheel, it is likely that your vehicle has had a tracker installed. Alternatively, some cars come equipped with a GPS system that allows them to be tracked remotely, which is in-built into the car and is therefore not noticeable.
Choosing a discreet tracker or hiding the wire is therefore a good idea, as the tracker being difficult or impossible to find is in your best interest, ensuring the thief cannot remove or damage the tracker.
Alternatively, it is possible to find out if you have a tracking device installed using a mobile app called TrackMyCar. The app allows users to check the location history of their vehicle, and view the last known position of the vehicle. This information can be used for insurance purposes, or to help locate stolen vehicles, but a thief should not be able to access this information without your login and password.
Where is the best place to put a tracking device in my car?
Many people disagree on the best place to put your GPS tracker. Some people say that the best place to put a GPS tracker in your car is under the driver’s seat. This way, if someone steals your vehicle, they won't be able to remove the device easily, as the area is small and hard to reach around.
Others say that the best location for a tracking device is under the hood of your vehicle. This way, when someone steals your car, they won't know where to look for the tracker, especially as there are so many wires and other components in the area.
If you want to hide the device from thieves, you can also install it inside a cluttered glove department, as it may be difficult for them to isolate and remove the tracking device.
How can I track my car location?
There are several apps available for tracking your vehicle’s location, such as Google Maps, Waze, Apple CarPlay, etc. These apps allow you to view your current location, speed, direction, and other information about your vehicle.
However, these apps only work when connected to a smartphone. If you want to use them while driving, you need to install a dedicated GPS device.
These devices are usually expensive and require monthly fees, which may put off potential purchasers. The best solution is often to use a free app called “Waze Live” which allows you to view live traffic conditions on your route, or a subscription to an application provided when you purchase a tracker.
Can a thief stop a tracker from working?
Yes, thieves can prevent trackers from emitting a signal. Thieves use several methods to do this, such as using a phone jammer, which blocks all signals from cell phones. They also use GPS blockers, which block satellite signals.
The best way to protect yourself against theft is to keep your valuables out of sight. If someone steals something valuable from you, they may be able to sell it for money, but they cannot resell it to another person unless they know how to remove the tracking device.
